Rural Entrepreneur Stream
For experienced business owners or managers who will start or buy a business in a rural Alberta community (population under 100,000, outside the Calgary and Edmonton CMAs). Candidates submit an EOI, get community support, complete an exploratory visit, then sign a performance agreement.
Who it suits
- Business owners or senior managers with $300,000 net worth and $100,000 to invest
- People willing to run the business in a participating rural community
Requirements
- Net worthMinimum net worth CAD $300,000 (own or with spouse/partner). ↗ alberta.ca
- InvestmentMinimum CAD $100,000 of own equity invested in the business. ↗ alberta.ca
- Experience3 years as an active business owner/manager within the past 10 years, or 4 years as a senior manager within the past 10 years. ↗ alberta.ca
- LanguageCLB/NCLC 4 in each ability; test under 2 years old at EOI. ↗ alberta.ca
- EducationCanadian high school equivalent with an ECA. ↗ alberta.ca
- OwnershipNew business: at least 51% ownership with partners who are citizens or PRs; buying a business: 100% ownership with full change of ownership. ↗ alberta.ca
- CommunityCommunity with population under 100,000 outside the Calgary and Edmonton CMAs; exploratory visit and report required; community support letter mandatory. ↗ alberta.ca
- JobsNew businesses must create at least one full-time job for a citizen or PR (not a relative) for at least 6 months. ↗ alberta.ca
How candidates are selected
Business EOI, then invitation to submit a business proposal; business applications are evaluated as received rather than in scheduled draws. Age 21-49, spouse education/language and Alberta relatives improve chances but are not required.
Location requirement: Business must be in a participating rural Alberta community.
Processing: AAIP says timelines vary as each file passes several review stages; no fixed time is published.
