What the work involves
Main duties
- Read drawings, schematics and electrical code requirements to plan equipment layouts
- Install and replace wiring, conduit, switch boxes, lighting and other electrical components
- Test equipment for continuity, voltage, current and resistance
- Maintain and repair motors, generators, transformers, switchgear and control systems
- Troubleshoot industrial electrical and electronic controls
- Run preventive maintenance and keep records

Employment requirements
- Secondary school is usually expected
- A four- or five-year apprenticeship, or over five years of trade experience plus courses, to qualify for trade certification
- Red Seal endorsement is available through the interprovincial exam
Partly regulated: trade certification is compulsory in Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Manitoba and voluntary in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, British Columbia and the Yukon (per NOC profile). Extra construction-electrician certification may be needed in some cases.
