New federal routes for doctors: an Express Entry category and 5,000 reserved spaces

Physicians with Canadian experience have their own Express Entry category, and provinces can nominate doctors using reserved federal spaces.

Two measures

On December 8, 2025, IRCC announced two measures for medical doctors:

  1. An Express Entry category for physicians with Canadian work experience. Candidates need at least 12 months of Canadian work in the past three years in one of three physician occupations (NOC 31100, 31101, 31102). Three rounds were held in 2026 by September; the latest, #440 on September 3, invited 229 people with a cutoff of 198.
  2. 5,000 reserved federal admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors who do not yet have Canadian experience, together with faster work permits.

What doctors still need

Licensing by a provincial medical regulator and credential assessment are separate steps that immigration does not replace. See physicians and the physicians category.
