What the work involves

Main duties

  • Set up, operate and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Run and interpret chemical analyses of blood, urine and other body fluids
  • Study blood cells and tissues, and prepare tissue sections for microscopes
  • Perform blood group and transfusion compatibility tests
  • Validate, document and report test results
  • Run quality control and may train or supervise lab staff

Employment requirements

  • Two- or three-year college program in medical laboratory technology, sometimes with supervised practical training
  • Registration with a regulator is required in NL, NS, NB, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta
  • Employers usually expect certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science
Partly regulated: registration is required in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta (per NOC profile).
