What the work involves
Main duties
- Examine teeth, gums and nearby tissue and plan treatment
- Fill cavities, do root canals, and fit crowns, bridges and dentures
- Extract and replace damaged teeth
- Teach patients oral hygiene and prevention
- Prescribe medication and refer patients to specialists
- Supervise hygienists, dental assistants and other staff

Employment requirements
- Two to four years of pre-dentistry university studies (or a Quebec college science program) and a degree from a recognized dental program

- Specialists need advanced accredited training or residency (for example three years for orthodontics and prosthodontics)
Regulated in every province and territory; a licence from the provincial or territorial dental regulator is required.
