What the work involves

Main duties

  • Meet clients and study project requirements
  • Design buildings, roads, bridges, dams and water and waste systems
  • Write construction specifications and recommend materials
  • Check that plans meet building codes and regulations
  • Run feasibility, traffic or environmental studies and analyze survey data
  • Supervise technicians and other engineers and review tenders and cost estimates

Employment requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or a related engineering discipline; a master's or doctorate may be required
  • Licensing by the provincial or territorial engineering association is required to approve drawings and practise as a P.Eng.
  • Registration needs an accredited degree, three or four years of supervised experience and a professional practice exam
Regulated in every province and territory through the provincial or territorial association of professional engineers (P.Eng.).
