Bus drivers carry passengers on transit routes, school runs, intercity trips and tours. The group also includes subway, streetcar and light rail operators who run trains on urban transit systems. Employers are transit agencies, school boards and private bus companies.

What the work involves

Main duties

  • Drive buses or operate streetcars and trains along set routes on schedule
  • Check the vehicle before and after each trip and report mechanical problems or delays
  • Give passengers information on fares, schedules and stops and handle fares where applicable
  • Help passengers with accessibility needs board and leave
  • Keep students safe when loading, riding and unloading (school bus drivers)
  • Follow signals and emergency procedures and report accidents

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school is usually required, with up to three months of on-the-job training
  • At least one year of safe driving experience
  • A bus-class driver licence (Class B, C, E or F in Ontario; Class 2 elsewhere); an air-brake endorsement and first aid may be required
