What the work involves

Main duties

  • Carry out pre-flight inspections and check weight and balance of passengers and cargo
  • Coordinate with air traffic control and ground crews and manage the flight crew
  • Monitor aircraft equipment and respond to in-flight emergencies and malfunctions
  • Prepare flight reports and keep communications with dispatchers and weather services
  • Instruct student or licensed pilots (flying instructors)
  • Assist pilots with system monitoring and post-flight checks (flight engineers)

Employment requirements

  • Secondary school and graduation from a certified flying or aviation school; a college diploma or degree may be required
  • A commercial pilot licence or air transport pilot licence, with ratings and endorsements for aircraft types
  • Flight engineers need a Transport Canada flight engineer licence
Pilots, flight engineers and flight instructors must hold licences issued by Transport Canada, with ratings for the aircraft type.
