How your CRS score changes over time

Your score is not fixed. Age, work, tests and family changes move it — sometimes automatically.

October 1, 2026Verified against official sources on 2026-10-01

Changes the system makes for you

  • Birthdays lower age points from age 30 onward (see age points).
  • Expiring documents can make you ineligible: language results after two years, an educational credential assessment after five.

Changes you need to report

You must update your profile when anything that affects your score or eligibility changes:

  • A new language test result
  • Another year of Canadian or foreign work experience
  • A new degree or diploma (with an ECA if it is foreign)
  • Marriage, a new common-law partner, separation or a new child
  • A provincial nomination

Each update triggers a new score. Keep in mind that the tie-breaking time IRCC uses is linked to when your profile was submitted, so check the official guidance before making changes close to a round.

Changes that can lower your score

Adding a spouse or partner who comes with you changes the scoring from the "without spouse" to the "with spouse" columns; this usually lowers your own factors and adds spouse factors. A lower retest score replaces the higher one if you enter it.

Common questions

Does work experience update automatically?

No. You enter dates; the system does not move you to the next band by itself. Update the profile when you complete another full year.

How do I know my score fell?

Your IRCC account shows the current score. Running the CRS calculator with updated details shows the change before you submit.
